Challengers Approaching! New Foes Have Appeared!

Well, here we are. Super Smash Bros Ultimate has arrived at long last. I truly cannot wait until I can get my hands on the game. The newest entry in one of my favorite video game franchises next to Pokémon has gotten me thinking, if Luna, Terra, and Sol were real Pokémon games, then how would they be represented in Smash Bros? If you’ve wondered the same, then wonder no more. The answer is here.

Given how important Legendary Pokémon are to Smash Bros, I find it quite surprising that we only have one Legendary Pokémon as a playable character in the games with Mewtwo. The reason for this almost certainly boils down to the fact that most Legendary Pokémon are not humanoid in shape (which may not be a requirement for Smash Bros, but certainly helps) and too big. Of course, Ridley has now proven that size can be negotiable. With that, I propose these two new characters for Smash Bros.

Terratlas would serve as slow heavy-weight character. It would be as tall as Ridley in Smash Bros, but also bulkier, due to it’s body shape, making it the most massive character in Smash Bros. This would, in turn, make it one of the slowest characters, but its power would more than make up for that low speed. Here’s a basic summary of its moves:

B: Brine: Terratlas attacks with a pulse of water from its body. As Terratlas takes damage, this move increases in power, size, and range.

Down-B:  Earthquake: Terratlas stomps the ground, creating an earthquake in the vicinity directly around it. This will stun and cause damage to any opponent in close proximity. In addition, this will cause a minor amount of damage to opponents standing on the same floor as Terratlas. The damage at a distance caused by this attack decrease each time it is used.

Side-B: Earth Power: Terratlas causes the ground in a line of sight of it to erupt. The attack is slow moving, but has very strong launching power if contact is made.

Up-B: Seismic Toss: Terratlas leaps straight up in to the air. As it travels upwards, if it contacts any opponent, Terratlas will grab them. Once at the peak of the jump, Terratlas will hurl the captured opponent straight down. If used over a ledge, the opponent can recover, but only if they act fast.

A Attacks: Various basic attacks that aren’t worth detailing.

Side-Smash: Blizzard: Terratlas summons a short ranged blizzard. At full charge, it might freeze the target.

Up-Smash: Geyser Strike: A forceful jet of water is sent above. Longer range the longer it’s charged.

Down-Smash: Seismic Manipulation: Attacks the ground beneath it powerfully.

Final Smash: Firma Force Of Nature: All it once, a rain, hail, and sandstorm begins. Terratlas leaps in to the air and absorbs nature’s energy all around it, then slams downwards in a semi-controllable trajectory that results in a shock wave. Afterwards, the weather created lingers for a period of time, during which Terratlas’ B attacks are powered up.

Seluna, while being quite tall, would be much more agile than most of the larger characters. It’s moves  may be weaker than Terratlas’ because of this, but Seluna can still pack a punch.

B: Lunar Beam: Seluna attacks with a beam of shadowy energy. The attack can be charged, and the longer it’s charged for, the thicker the beam, longer, and more powerful the beam will be.

Down-B: Moonlight: As long as the button is held, Seluna will slowly heal over time.

Side-B: Moonblast: A phantasmal moon appears above Seluna, and aims an attack at the closest opponent. The attack has little to no knock back, and doesn’t o the most damage, but will almost always hit.

Up-B: Stone Edge: Seluna causes rocky spikes to jet out from beneath. These spikes will cause damage and knock back to anyone they hit as the emerge, and fling Seluna up into the air. If used on the ground, these spikes will linger for a short period. or until the move is used again. Anyone besides Seluna that touches these spikes will take minor damage.

A Attacks: Various basic attacks not worth detailing.

Side-Smash: Nightstorm: Seluna attacks with a snap of dark energy right in front of it.

Up-Smash: Ancient Power: Seluna hurls power-infused boulders straight up.

Down-Smash: Night Shade: A pulse of shadow emanates downwards from Seluna.

Final Smash: Apogee Tidal Power: A massive full Moon appears in the sky and Seluna calls upon its energy in order to attack with a massive beam of silvery lunar energy. The full Moon lingers for a short period afterwards, powering up all of Seluna’s B moves.

 

Now, you’re probably wondering, what about Heliosol? Well, we also need a new stage, don’t we? Let’s solve both those problems.

Solar Peak: This stage is set in Luna, Terra, and Sol’s Solar Peak Ruins, where Heliosol is found in Luna and Terra. The main floor of the stage is a raised altar above the rest of the ruins (the alter where you would encounter Heliosol). There are also two floating platforms, one over the drop-off on either side of the stage. Periodically, Heliosol will appear in the stage. It will randomly appear in its normal form or its Ascended Form. When in its standard form, it will stand in the background and randomly launch fiery attacks at the battlefield. But when it appears in its Ascended Form, it will join the battle as a boss. When it’s defeated, it will release a burst of fire and light that will cause damage to all fighters except the one who beat it. When Heliosol isn’t around, Sun-themed Pokémon such as Solrock, Solem, Volcarona, Heliolisk, Turcell, and Gigastar will appear at random in the background. They don’t do anything but stand around.

 

Now, there’s one more way that Pokémon is represented in Smash Bros. Pokéball Pokémon. So, of course, there’s got to be some Tenno ones.

Buffern: Buffern will follow the fighter who summoned it around the battle field, and use its ferns to shield them from certain attacks. Buffern will disappear either after a short time, or taking enough damage.

Solurtle: Solurtle will use Rapid Spin and Heat Wave, attack around the field at random.

Kappaqua: Kappaqua will stand in one place and hurl Aqua Bombs at anyone who gets near it.

Calumba: The Pokémon will fly around the field, using Aroma Therapy to heal the fighters, giving a preference to the one who called it out.

Noxic: Noxic will float around the field. Anyone who touches it will take damage over time for a short amount of time due to poisoning.

Beetundra: Betundra will roll its snowball around the field, and it will get bigger the more it moves. If a player touches the snowball, they will be knocked away. The bigger the snowball, the bigger the knock back.

Boodini: The magician Pokémon will disappear and reappear at random. Whenever it appears, it will attack.

Gravisaac: While Gravisaac is on the field, gravity will randomly change between being more and less intense.

Myoken: Myoken will guide the fighters to treasure, such as CDs or Trophies.

 

And that’s it. Now enjoy all your smashing!

Heliosol Ascended Form

Classification: The Solar Pokémon
Type: Dragon/Light
Description: It was given the task of constructing the cornerstone of the Solar System, the Sun, by the Cosmic Architect. When it absorbs ample cosmic energy, it will ascend to a higher form.
Does Not Evolve

In Pokémon Sol Version, Team Planetary takes their plans to the next level. Instead of simply taking control of the legendary Pokémon Heliosol, they use a special machine to force Heliosol to absorb as much cosmic energy as they can force into it. This energy is what they have gathered from Meteoric Shards, the Cosmic Guardians, and Terratlas and Seluna, so it is the energy of the Cosmic Architect. This energy causes Heliosol to ascend into a new, more divine, form. In this form, Heliosol has access to a facsimile of the power the Cosmic Architect possesses. Also in this form, its Fire-Type changes into a Dragon-Type, and most of its Fire-Type moves transform into equivalent Dragon-Type moves. However, Heliosol cannot maintain this form for long, and it will soon transform back into its Regular Form. After recharging its cosmic energy reserves, it will ascend once more.

This form changing is controlled by Heliosol’s new ability, Ascension Cycle. At the end of every turn in battle, Ascension Cycle will transform Heliosol into the form it isn’t. So Regular Form will transform into Ascended Form, and Ascended Form will transform into Regular Form. When it changes form, certain moves it knows will also change mid-battle, meaning that Heliosol could potentially have access to eight different moves in one battle. See the in-depth page for more details on what moves will change. Whatever form Heliosol is in when the battle ends is the form it will begin the next battle in.

A Heliosol captured in Sol Version will have the ability Ascension Cycle replacing Pressure, which would have been its second ability in Luna and Terra Version, and therefore it cannot have Pressure as an ability if captured in Sol. One captured in Luna or Terra Version and traded over to Sol Version will maintain Pressure as its second ability. As Ascension Cycle is not an ability in Luna and Terra Versions, a Heliosol with Ascension Cycle will have it replaced by Pressure in Luna and Terra, but it will return if traded back to Sol Version.

Revealing: Pokémon Cosmic Quest the Movie 2: Nemex Unleashed

The next Cosmic Quest movie has its title, it’s called Nemex Unleashed. This is the final version of the movie’s poster. It would seem that new cover Pokémon of Sol Version has taken Heliosol’s spot on the poster. And what’s the deal with the menacing Pokémon in the background? Could it be the titular Nemex? Nemex Unleashed will be coming soon. Stay tuned.

Cosmic Quest’s 3rd Anniversary and Sol Version

Two years ago today, on Cosmic Quest’s 1st Anniversary, I made Luna and Terra Versions that much closer to a reality by releasing their cover art. For the longest time now I have talked about Sol Version, the “third version” of my “generation,” but until now I have done little to make it exist. That ends now, on Cosmic Quest’s 3rd Anniversary. I proudly present the cover art of Pokémon Sol Version.

Sol Version

There are three things to note from this artwork. Perhaps most obvious is that no longer are my games confined to the 3DS, they have switched over to the Nintendo Switch. But Sol Version isn’t the only game moving to the Switch. Luna and Terra have also both been officially moved as well. Look to the bottom of this post for their new cover art.

The second thing you might notice is that the cover Pokémon bears a striking resemblance to Heliosol, and yet that’s not quite what it is. What could this Pokémon be? Is it perhaps some sort of alternate form of Heliosol? Only time will tell.

Finally, you may notice that the logo on this cover is not the same Sol Version Logo I’ve been displaying. That is because I have redesigned all three of my games’ logos, making them much more unique, complex, and pretty. Take note that Luna and Terra also have new logos.

In addition to this cover art, the site has gotten some upgrades to go with the “release” of Sol Version. A new page has been added to detail the Battle Final Frontier, Tenno’s version of the Battle Frontier. Also, the Tenno Region and New Features/Mechanics pages have been updated with Sol Version information, including a description of the return of the Pokémon World Tournament. Finally, as a special bonus, I have created yet another new page. This one is a gallery page, which features all of the various piece of art that I make for this website, but have nothing else to do with, and nowhere else to put them after they serve their purpose. Check it out.

The Pokémon Cosmic Quest Theme Song

Recently I received a private message on FanFiction.Net from the reader MajorBrony95, and in it, they sent me an idea for a theme song for Cosmic Quest, just like one that would play at the beginning of real episodes. They even wrote the accompanying animation sequence. I am happy to share this work with everyone, and am making it the official theme song of Cosmic Quest.

(Launch voice) “3…” (Ash is in a bright lit stadium. We are given a close up of his face as he gives a confident smirk)
“2…” (Ash enlarges a Pokéball and holds it up to his face, determination written all over.)
“1…” (We pan out and Ash throws the ball at the screen with all his might.)
“Blastoff!” (The ball opens up with a bright light at the screen.)
(Crowd voice) “Pokémon!”
(Male singer (think singer from “Advanced Battle”)) “Launching off into new frontier.”
(All scenes are fast-forwarded) (A rocket ship is launching off a pad and lifting off into the blue sky. A downward pan-around shows Ash is running after it on the ground, staring up at it with an amazed smile on his face. Pikachu is at his feet, also with a big smile.)
“I’m not afraid knowing that you’re here.”
(Ash then looks to his right and sees Brenda running alongside him. He looks to his left and sees Brock also by his side. Both have large smiles on their faces. A change to the front shows all of them facing the front. As Ash’s face gets close the scene changes.)

(We now see a beautiful outer space background with stars and galaxies. Heliosol rises up from the bottom left of the screen as, in a quick switch, Seluna rises from the right bottom. They then blast a Solar and Lunar Beam attack respectively at each other, resulting in an explosion and a cloud of dust. Ryusei and Gravisaac then shoot out of the cloud.)
“It’s my goal to be…” (Crowd voice) “Number One!”
(Ash points out a command to Pikachu, who leaps into the air and, on “Number One,” performs Hallowed Lightning in an impressive display.)
“Through foes and rivals, we’ll pass our test.”
(In front of a black hole background, Sirius, Cygnus, and Orion stand with evil grins with Cosmo in front of them with a impassive, yet nasty look at the camera. Then it shows a glaring Ryu ordering Dragonair to use Dragon Rush at the screen.)
“To be the very best!”
(Jesse, James, Meowth, and Wobbuffet are shot into the air, silently shouting in a blast off.)
“All to complete our cosmic quest!”
(Ash and company are looking up at the sky and a pan-around shows us going out into an above shot of the Earth, displaying the Cosmic Quest logo above it, as a shooting star speeds toward the screen.)
(Crowd voice) “Pokémon!”

Episode 68 Review

Wow, between Sun and Moon and Winter Break it’s been quite some time since my last episode. Now that that’s all over, I’ll be trying to get back into a more regular routine.

To put it simply, this episode had me stressed out. I knew I had to do a special episode to coincide with the release of Sun and Moon, but there were so many problems I had to deal with. The biggest was how little we actually knew about Sun and Moon at the time. It was easy for me to write the Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire special two years ago because even if those games hadn’t come out at the time, we already knew mostly everything about them due to the original Ruby and Sapphire. I had no such benefit this time around. To make things worse, the obvious connections between Solgaleo/Lunala and Heliosol/Seluna were just begging to be addressed in the episode, but with so little information confirmed about Solgaleo and Lunala, there was no way that I could extrapolate any well-detailed plot connections between the two. Of course now in hindsight we know that Solgaleo and Lunala have little to do with the actual Sun and Moon themselves, but before the release of game, for all we knew, they could have been the creators of the Sun and Moon, which would have caused some major problems no matter what I wrote in the special. So in the the end, I had to go with the very simple concept of turning Lunala and Solgaleo into the “emissaries” of Seluna and Heliosol. What exactly does emissary mean in this instance? I couldn’t even tell you. And as you might know if you’ve been following this sight for the past two months is that even with as simple of an explanation I gave for the connection between the two sets of Legendaries, I still had to make retcons once the games came out. I never would have even guessed that Lunala and Solgaleo were in-fact Ultra Beasts, and that little fact completely invalidated my entire description of how Heliosol and Seluna were connected to them. Now I’m left with some overly convoluted explanation that Cosmog was created when some of the Cosmic Architect’s energy fell down the first Ultra Wormhole. Oh well, not much I can do about it now short of some more retcons, which I’d rather just not do. The one other thing that gave me some issues was my guest character. Just as Steven appeared in my last special, I wanted a character from Sun and Moon to appear here. I debated between Kukui, Samson Oak, and Lillie. They all presented problems. Just as with the Legendaries, we really knew nothing about any of them at the time. What made things worse, was if I was going to claim that my series takes place after the Sun and Moon anime, then I would have to make sure I don’t contradict anything that might happen in the show with any of those characters. In the end, I went with Kukui because we had met him already in the Sun and Moon demo, allowing me to know his character and personality well enough to write for him. That, combined with trailers for the Sun and Moon anime allowed me to approximate what is to be expected from his interactions with Ash.

Cosmic Quest in a Magazine!?

It has just been brought to my attention by commenter named Pip that Cosmic Quest has been featured in an Australian Pokémon magazine…well…sort of… Apparently this unofficial, but nonetheless published, Pokémon magazine used my History of the Pokémon World page as a source for their article on the topic (a better description would be they plagiarized it, as I was not sourced and I granted no permission). This is made obvious by the fact that they make references to the Cosmic Architect, Terratlas, and Seluna. See for yourself here. Just to be clear, I do not approve of this blatant plagiarism by any means, but at the same time, this is just so hilarious that I can’t help but share it.

Pokémon Sun, Moon, and Cosmic Quest

Final Update: Over the past couple days I have finished off the remaining items on the list. Every Pokédex page has been brought up-to-date with new moves, abilities, and TM/HMs, the History of the Pokémon World page now contains references to Sun and Moon’s history, and the Sun and Moon Special Episode has now been changed to better line up with Sun and Moon’s lore. On topic of the last item on that list, when I initially wrote the episode (before the release of Sun and Moon) I decided that good generic way to link Lunala and Solgaleo to Seluna and Heliosol would be to say that the Alola Legendaries are the emissaries of the Tenno Legendaries. I figured that there would be very little that could contradict that idea presented in Sun and Moon. Little did I suspect that Lunala and Solgaleo were actually Ultra Beasts, and therefore couldn’t just be simple emissaries of Pokémon from the normal universe. My new explanation is that in the ancient past a portion of the Cosmic Architect’s energy got sucked into an Ultra Wormhole. This energy then took physical form in Ultra Space as a Cosmog, eventually turning into Solgaleo or Lunala. One last thing, there is one item on my list that remains unchecked. The Z-Move one. I have decided that until I get evidence of there being Z-Moves in regions other than the Alola Region, I will wait to make any new Z-Moves at all. Thanks for your patience during these updates.

Update 2: The initial plan in regards to TMs was to use Sun and Moon’s TM list as a base to my own list, just as I was already doing with Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire’s list. I discovered recently when looking at Sun and Moon’s list that this will not work. As HMs are not present in the games, many HMs have been turned into TMs. For obvious reasons, this does not work with my games, as I still have HMs. Another problem is that Flash and Dig were removed as TMs. This was likely done because they lost their status as a field move. Once again, they are still field moves in my games, so they need to remain as TMs. The TM list I’m using will now be a hybrid of Gen VI and Gen VII’s lists. It’s a little more confusing, but it allows me to use the new TM moves from Sun and Moon, while also making sure my list makes sense. See the New Items page for an exact break down of the hybrid list. Also, taking advantage of all these changes, I decided to add a new HM. Replacing Rock Climb as the seventh HM is a new move called Terrain Trek. In a similar manner to Rhyhorn in X and Y or Mudsdale in Sun and Moon, this move allows you to get on the back of your Pokémon and ride it across rough terrain. Update: It has just come to my attention that there is a move introduced in Sun and Moon called Ice Hammer (Funny story, I learned of it when a Clefable used Metronome). As you might already know, not only is one of my moves called Ice Hammer, but it is one of the Tenno Region’s TMs, specifically the one given out by Halley after defeating his gym. As I bow to the official canon on matters like this, my Ice Hammer attack no longer exists. Depending on what I can think of, I will either give my move a new name, or come up with a new move to replace it. Fortunately, said move was never used in Cosmic Quest, so no retcons are needed there. Speaking of retcons, I am at the point in Moon Version right now where I am realizing that I might need to retcon my special episode in order to fit better with the story of Sun and Moon. More news on that to come. Both topics have been added to my to-do list.

I hope you’re all enjoying your Sun and Moon Versions, I for one sure am. These games are amazing. That being said, they put the entire Cosmic Quest project in an interesting scenario. This entire website is now out of date. Many aspects of this website were designed with games taking up the spot of a hypothetical Generation VII, but now that Sun and Moon make up Gen VII, my games are now “Gen IIX,” and the website must be updated accordingly. Over the next few weeks I will likely be too busy playing Moon Version to write any new episodes, but I should be able to get in some time here and there to update the website. Below I will post a to-do list of everything that needs to be changed, and as I make the updates, I will actively update this post so that you can know what has and hasn’t been changed. I will also keep this post pinned to the top of the home page for easy access, at least until I start writing episodes again.

To-Do List (In No Particular Order):
1. Update movesets and abilities of all Tenno Pokémon with new moves/abilities (Done)
2. Update compatible TM list of all Tenno Pokémon to reflect the new hybrid TM list. (Done)
3. Update the Light-Type page with any Alola Pokémon and/or moves that become Light-Type (if any) (Done, see page for details)
4. Add Alolan Pokémon with signature moves to the list of signature moves in the new mechanics/features page (Done. Fun fact: Every single evolution line introduced in Alola has at least one Signature move and/or ability, making my list of signature moves quite large)
5. Determine what new moves (if any) will be combo-type moves and add them to the list of the new mechanics/features page (Done, see section for details)
6. Add an Alolan representative to the Ultimate Six (now Seven) section of the new mechanics/features page (Done, please note that the protagonist of Sun and Moon currently has no official name, so I’m tentatively calling him Sun)
7. Determine what (if any) Alolan Pokémon gain Ground-Type immunity and add them to the list in the new mechanics/features page (Done, see section for details)
8. Add Alola Pokémon that can be found in the Tenno Region to the Tenno Region page’s list of example Pokémon (Done. I’ve also made a few other minor changes)
9. (I’m not sure about this one yet) Create a Z-Move section in the Attackdex and create new Z-Moves for it (Delayed until further notice)
10. Bring the History of the Pokémon  World page up-to-date with the history of the Alola Region (Done, I also added the Legends of the Johto Region, which for one reason or another was previously missing.)
11. Either rename Ice Hammer or replace it with a comparable new move (Done, the new move is Icicle Lance)
12. Retcon the Sun and Moon special episode to fall better in line with the story of Sun and Moon (Done, see the Final Update section above for more details)
13. Whatever else I might think of (That’s all for now, but who knows what else might come to me in the future)

The interesting thing to note is the ninth item on the list. Back when I started making Mega Evolutions for the website, I was torn on whether or not to do so. Even back then, I predicted that Mega Evolution was going to be the major item of Gen VI, but mean very little to the following generations,  and now, with Sun and Moon introducing no new Megas, it would seem I was right. And now because of this, I’m left with a generation taking place after the height of Mega Evolution that still introduces new Mega Evolutions. Personally, I don’t care that much, as there’s no specific reason why they’re not making new Megas anymore, and they could easily go an make new ones again later, but I’m afraid that Z-Moves might be a different story. From what I can tell so far, Z-Moves seem like they might be specific to Alola, in which case it would be odd for me to have Z-Moves in Tenno. I would love to come up with some new Z-Moves, especially a Light-Type one for parity reasons, but I’m just not sure it will turn out right if I do so. We’ll just have to wait and see. On a related note, I will not be making “Tennoan Forms” of Pokémon. Unless Regional Variants like Alolan Forms prove to be a thing outside of the Alola Region in future games, I will not be jumping on that bandwagon.

Pokémon Sun, Moon, and Cosmic Quest

I’m sure most can agree with me when I say how truly excited I am for Sun and Moon. Of course, these games mean something different to me than most, as they are so similar to my own Luna, Terra, and Sol Versions. The new Legendary Pokémon (I’m going to call them Solgaleo and Lunala after the trademarks until we get confirmation of another name) being based off of the Sun and Moon just as my Heliosol and Seluna are, one might question what this means for the future of Cosmic Quest. The answer is that I am fully embracing Sun and Moon, as seen in the site’s new banner. I will do my best to reconcile any contradictions made between my already established facets of Luna, Terra, and Sol, while also changing any yet to be established facets to fit accordingly. Depending on the background of Solgaleo and Lunala, this will require either a retcon of Luna, Terra, and Sol, or a minor adjustment to Sun and Moon, depending on what I feel I can get away with without twisting the continuity of either too much. I can tell you right now that I will likely have Solgaleo and Lunala serve as the emissaries to Heliosol and Seluna respectively, assuming that doesn’t contradict anything put forth in their official lore. If Solgaleo and Lunala turn out to be creators of the Sun and Moon, then I will have to come up with another idea. These next couple of months will be an interesting time for sure.
